Types of studpoker

There are different types of Studpoker but the rules do not differ a lot. The original variant of studpoker was played with 5 cards and therefore also called 5 card studpoker. It’s origin is probably in the American Civil war. You will still see this type of studpoker in online casinos as it is still a popular game.
Around the twentieth century another variant of studpoker was developed called 7 card studpoker. 7 Card Studpoker was the most popular type of poker played in the United States.
Some online casinos might even have their own variants of studpoker but you will see that the rules do not differ much form 5 or 7 card studpoker. On this page we will explain the rules of both types of studpoker as they are played in an online casino. Bear in mind that in an online casino you usually are the only player. That is if you are not participating in a tournament. Usually it is just you against the dealer. The rules might differ a little per online casino but that is usually in the execution of the game. Like some online casinos will give you already all the cards at the start, or there is a difference in which cards are being dealt face up or face down.

Rules of studpoker

We will explain the rules for only one player which is usually the case when you play online. It does not differ a lot from tournaments the only difference there is that there are more players and you just have to wait for each player to take its turn.

5-Card Studpoker

5 Card studpoker starts with you placing your first bet, also called the ante. The dealer will then deal you two cards with the first card face down and the second card face up. If you want to continue with your hand you can raise or call. If you do not want to continue you fold.
When you raise or call you will receive another face up card. This can continue until you have a total of 5 cards on your hand. So you can keep on betting until you have a total of 5 cards. After that it is showdown time and your cards will be compared with the cards of the dealer and in the case of a tournament also with the other players. The best hand will win. The hand rankings can be found at the bottom of this page.

7-Card studpoker

The game of 7 card studpoker will start like 5 card studpoker with you placing your ante. After that the dealer will deal you 3 cards, 2 cards face down and one card face up. You can now choose to fold or raise/call and in the last case you will receive another face up card. This will be repeated three times. In total you will receive 7 cards of which you can choose five to make the best hand. The winner will be the one with the best 5 hand card. As you can imagine the 7 card studpoker is becoming more and more popular as you have more chances on a very good hand.
